Abstract

Hidden in plain sight, the North East’s Jewish heritage is inseparable from the region’s wider landscape. The sites of synagogues, burial grounds, community halls, and the homes of every-day people can help us tell stories about the growth of our urban centres, the boom, bust, and renewal of industry, and the purpose of community at times of national and international crises. From Newcastle to Sunderland, down to Bishop Auckland, Middlesbrough, and everywhere in between, this heritage will be traced and mapped to tell the history of a minority religious community in continual existence from the 1750s onwards. This talk will cover 250 years of Jewish heritage across the North East, exploring its historical sites and the dynamic webs of history, identity, and lived experiences embedded throughout the region’s landscape.
