SUMMARY:SCR Talk “ LETTERS TO A SOLDIER”
DESCRIPTION:In late 2021 some renovation work was taking place at Brancepeth Castle. A trap door was exposed and underneath was found an archivist`s treasure trove. Going back to the time when the Castle was the regimental headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry here were such things as instruction booklets\, posters and magazines along with cups\, bottles and other artefacts. However\, of most interest were the twenty or so letters which had been written to soldiers based in the Castle.  Written by mothers\, fathers\, sisters\, brothers and sweethearts they paint a wonderful picture of the realities of domestic life in the 1940s. This talk is based on the content of those letters.  \nAll welcome

All welcome! \nDominique Brancher\, Henri M Peyre Professor of French\, Yale University & University College Slater Fellow 2025 \n  \nThis is an exciting opportunity to hear an outstanding scholar of French Literature explore the reception of two leading French authors in the Tunstall chapel\, part of our 16th century heritage at Castle. This lecture is open to all. It is of particular relevance to those interested in literature\, history\, medicine…and spy stories. \n\nWhat link exists between medical hermeneutics and literary criticism? Between the practice of espionage and the art of deciphering texts? Do they not all seek to uncover some hidden truth? \nIn 1979\, the historian Carlo Ginzburg published a much-discussed essay\, Spie. Radici di un paradigma indiziario\, which plays on the ambiguity of the Italian word Spie\, which means both clues and spies. From the Neolithic hunter to Freud and Conan Doyle\, he draws out a hunting model of research and reflection for the human sciences. \nWe would like to put this paradigm to the test through two canonical authors of French literature. What happens when doctors dissect the work of Montaigne? And when one of the founders of the CIA builds one of the largest collections of Molière in the world?

SUMMARY:Castle SCR Formal Dinner - Thursday 23 January 2025
DESCRIPTION:Formal Dinner \nCastle SCR members are warmly invited to book for Dinner in the Great Hall. Pre Dinner drinks will be served in the Bishop’s Dining Room from 6.30pm prior to the procession at 6.45pm from the Tunstall Gallery to the Great Hall for dinner at 7pm. The dress code is smart attire with gowns (we have some spare gowns available upon request). \nPlease do not book if you are not an SCR member or have been invited as a guest.
