Stories from the margins of Chilean higher education\nIAS Fellows’ Public Lecture by Professor Carolina Guzmán Valenzuela (Autonomous University of Barcelona) \nLocation: Bishop’s Dining Room \nAbstract \nIn recent years\, higher education systems around the world have attempted to make education more accessible and promote diversity. Yet many students continue to experience a sense of exclusion within university spaces. This public lecture draws on research conducted in Chilean universities in exploring the experiences of students who often remain on the margins of academic life. These students include first-generation university attendees\, women in STEM subjects\, and indigenous students. \nTheir stories reveal persistent structural barriers\, such as cultural dislocation\, epistemic injustice\, discrimination\, and unequal expectations. However\, they also demonstrate significant degrees of individual agency\, resistance and transformation. Despite institutions often failing to recognise or adapt to their needs and perspectives\, these students actively navigate and challenge the conditions of their participation in higher education. \nThe lecture invites reflection on how universities might be reimagined by fostering resilience among students and by transforming institutional cultures\, norms\, and practices to promote greater justice and inclusivity. \nThis lecture is free and open to all. Registration is not required to attend in person.

DESCRIPTION:Unveiling the secrets of hidden supermassive black holes\, 18 November\, 4pm tea & cake\, lecture from 5pm\nDr Vicky Fawcett \nAlmost every known galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its heart\, including our own Milky Way\, which have masses millions to billions that of our Sun. Understanding how these monster black holes shape their surroundings is crucial to our understanding of how galaxies evolve. Some black holes are very energetic\, launching powerful winds and jets\, and are referred to as “active”. We have recently found a population of these active black holes that are enshrouded by dust that exhibit peculiar properties. An emerging theory suggests that these dusty black holes represent a key stage in galaxy evolution\, and so understanding their nature is extremely important.

SUMMARY:SCR Talk “ LETTERS TO A SOLDIER”
DESCRIPTION:In late 2021 some renovation work was taking place at Brancepeth Castle. A trap door was exposed and underneath was found an archivist`s treasure trove. Going back to the time when the Castle was the regimental headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry here were such things as instruction booklets\, posters and magazines along with cups\, bottles and other artefacts. However\, of most interest were the twenty or so letters which had been written to soldiers based in the Castle.  Written by mothers\, fathers\, sisters\, brothers and sweethearts they paint a wonderful picture of the realities of domestic life in the 1940s. This talk is based on the content of those letters.  \nAll welcome

FROM MONTAIGNE’S SPINE TO MOLIÈRE’S SPY \nMonday 10 March\, 5:30pm\, Tunstall Chapel. All welcome! \nDominique Brancher\, Henri M Peyre Professor of French\, Yale University & University College Slater Fellow 2025 \n  \nThis is an exciting opportunity to hear an outstanding scholar of French Literature explore the reception of two leading French authors in the Tunstall chapel\, part of our 16th century heritage at Castle. This lecture is open to all. It is of particular relevance to those interested in literature\, history\, medicine…and spy stories. \n\nWhat link exists between medical hermeneutics and literary criticism? Between the practice of espionage and the art of deciphering texts? Do they not all seek to uncover some hidden truth? \nIn 1979\, the historian Carlo Ginzburg published a much-discussed essay\, Spie. Radici di un paradigma indiziario\, which plays on the ambiguity of the Italian word Spie\, which means both clues and spies. From the Neolithic hunter to Freud and Conan Doyle\, he draws out a hunting model of research and reflection for the human sciences. \nWe would like to put this paradigm to the test through two canonical authors of French literature. What happens when doctors dissect the work of Montaigne? And when one of the founders of the CIA builds one of the largest collections of Molière in the world?
