DESCRIPTION:SCR Lecture Series \nAll members of the SCR\, MCR and JCR welcome \nTimothy Sykes \nThe Bishop’s Dining Room: Wednesday 4 March 2026 at 7.00pm (drinks) for 7.30pm \nThe Lecture: \nThe present clock in the courtyard of Durham Castle has stood sentinel over the College for only seventy-five years. There is\, however\, since the 18th century\, a somewhat interrupted history of a turret (tower) clock in various locations in the Castle. From that follows conjecture as to the clock movement(s) which may have driven those clocks\, of which now only a dial is to be detected from period engravings. The bell in the clock chamber may also provide some clues. \nIn two parts\, fragments and clues from that earlier history will first be explored. The second part will then look closely\, with some technical details\, at the very fine clock movement of which the College is privileged to be the custodian. \nThe Speaker: \nTimothy Sykes matriculated at University College Durham in 1973 and graduated BA in law in 1976.  He trained as a solicitor in the City of London with Clifford-Turner (now Clifford Chance) and remained with that firm for some years after admission to the Roll. He subsequently returned to the north and practised commercial law in Carlisle for thirty years\, retiring in 2013. At the invitation of the Master\, he joined the SCR in 2006. He is as regular a presence in College as his living in the Lake District allows. His amateur horological interests have been deployed in College over a number of years.

DESCRIPTION:Dante’s Hidden Camino: A Westward Journey to the End of the World\nMonday 2 March 2026\, BDR\, 4pm tea and coffee\, talk 4:30-5:30pm\nProfessor Mary Watt\, Professor of Italian Studies\, University of Florida & Slater Fellow 2026 \nTalk chaired by Castle MA student Isabella Hanger. This is a joint event between University College and the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies \nIn this talk\, Dr. Watt points to a westward itinerary subtly embedded within the narrative of Dante’s Divine Comedy. This “hidden Camino\,” she suggests\, invites readers to trace a pilgrimage that begins in Jerusalem\, moves to Rome\, then continues toward and beyond the confines of Dante’s known world. While the poem’s engagement with the pilgrimage to Rome has long drawn scholarly attention\, Dr. Watt proposes that Dante presents Rome as only one stage within a broader redemptive trajectory\, one that restores the city to its providential course while simultaneously charting a spiritual\, political\, and cosmic movement westward. Within this expanded itinerary\, textual cues hint at a map visible only to those who truly seek it: Santiago de Compostela emerges as the third stage of this triune pilgrimage\, a waypoint in a journey that follows the sun and gestures toward the “new world” beyond the ends of the earth.

DESCRIPTION:Our Slater Fellow\, Professor Mary Watt\, is organizing walk-and-talks on the Northern Saints Trails: \nThe walks will take place on the following mornings: \nAlways at 9:30 am\, starting at 7 Owengate\, the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies: \n\nWednesday\, January 28: The Way of Love\nWednesday\, February 11: The Way of Life\nWednesday\, February 25: The Way of Learning\nWednesday\, March 11: The Way of Life\n\nhttps://www.thisisdurham.com/northernsaints/trails \nEach walk will last 1.5–3 hours. The trails may be muddy\, so participants should wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring water and\, if desired\, portable snacks (granola bars\, trail mix\, etc.). \nIdeally\, participants will let me know ahead of time if they plan to join me by sending an email to marywatt@ufl.edu\, but I will be outside IMEMS at those times in any event.

DESCRIPTION:These will be informal communal gatherings in the SCR\, which will allow members to get together for a chat with friends and provide an opportunity to meet SCR members who are new to them\, for a social gathering. Members may drop in any time between 3:30 and 5:30 pm and stay as long as they wish. \nThere is no charge for the event(s).  But if you would like to attend please could you e-mail David (d.landes@me.com) Please advise which date(s) you would like to attend and if you have any specific dietary requirements.
